Natural Fashion - Tribal Inspiration from Africa

"The lower valley of the Omo, at the borders of Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan, remains one of the wildest places in Africa. Over the course of numerous voyages to this forgotten land, Hans Silvester became fascinated by the beauty of the Surma and Mursi tribes, who share a taste for body painting and extravagant decorations borrowed from nature."

These are the enigmatic portrait faces I've abstracted from Silvester's photography to explore with my oil paint medium. I find them haunting, silently asking for an appeal that's up to the viewer to decide. Their dead stares draw emotion. This emotion captured on my life size canvasses through textural impressionism. From far the viewer is captivated by the image and then pulled closer for the inspection of intimate brush strokes that comes alive.
