"Kunskwatier" (Art Quarter) Article in Absa Festival guide 2-9April

English version - KKnK Official Website:

"In a bold new step to represent the full spectrum of visual art in South Africa, 2011 sees the launch of the Art Quarter at the Absa KKNK (Klein Karoo National Arts Festival).

In addition to the established curated exhibitions, where the country's top contemporary artists are featured, the Art Quarter now offers artists an unique opportunity to exhibit their art at what remains one of South Africa's premier art events. The Absa KKNK continues to draw a huge audience of theater and music fans, with a substantial number of discerning visitors that collect art. It is with this target market in mind that the Art Quarter is being facilitated.

The Art Quarter consists of two sections. The first section is situated in the heartbeat of the festival activities, but toward the restaurant area of leafy avenues, this trendy yet relaxed part of town contains many historical buildings suited to art exhibitions. Over the years this area has organically become the haven of independent solo exhibitions by leading artists. These artists have enjoyed success and are excited by the prospect of developing the Art Quarter into a fine art fair within the national arts festival. The second section takes you to galleries in the vicinity of Oudtshoorn, De Rust and Calitzdorp."

The city of Salzburg is situated by the river Salzach, a river that runs across the entire province in a bended curve and shapes the landscape of it. The Salzach is 225 kilometres long and one of the most important rivers of the Austrian Alps.
This is probably due to the similarity in the names. In fact, "Salz" means salt and "Ache" is an old German term for a river. The name therefore refers to the importance that the Salzach had as a transportation route for salt from Hallein and other mining places of the province up to the late 18th century.

Press Release

One Roof Studio presents a unique collaboration of resident Artists

One Roof Studio, will be hosting its first major art exhibition by resident artists on the 29th July 2010 to mark its one year anniversary as one of Cape Towns up-and-coming art spaces.

This follows a number of smaller “open studio days” as One Roof enters the market to provide the Cape Town art scene with a new and convenient location for working artists and for exhibiting artistic talent.

Alex Whyatt, originator of the One Roof studio, says “the opening Resident Artists Exhibition on the 29th is a very exciting initiative to showcase the exceptional talent of our emerging and established artists and to encourage more artists to join our community. Our Ethos is to provide a space for creative types of many disciplines to come together and benefit from the artistic energy we generate”.
The space is an open-plan New York-style loft, accessed by stairs within the original Old Biscuit Mill building. It is designed as a shared studio for all types of creatives from painters to ceramic and jewellery artists. One Roof is also an ideal teaching space, with all necessary facilities at hand.
The Resident Artists exhibition on the 29th is a collaboration of fine artists currently working at the One Roof studio. These include South African and international talents:

Alex Wiid – Painter and mixed-media Artist
Angela Katschke - Painter
Jeanie Hugo - Jewelery Artist
Lindé - Painter
Tessa Wethli - Ceramic Artist
Yve Borstrock - Ceramic Artist

The event will begin at 6pm on Thursday 29th July with welcome drinks and is hosted by comedian, Russell Fox. The exhibition will also be open on Friday 30th July by appointment only and from 9am – 1pm on Saturday, during the Biscuit Mill Market.
This is a beautiful space and a wonderful opportunity, says Alex Whyatt. “The exhibition promises to be a fantastic experience and we welcome all artists and art lovers to join us!”

Lindé - Painting

Lindé received a diploma in fine arts at the Ruth Prowse Art College.
Following this, she worked in advertising, did freelancing in graphic design and photography and in the last 2 years, has re-kindled her old love for painting. Her chosen medium is oil on canvas. Amongst her preferred subjects to paint, are larger than life portraits of people and cityscapes. She has exhibited in Johannesburg, auctioned some of her paintings in London and has now returned to her favourite city to showcase her new work.

Her most recent work is an impressionistic and textural display of architectural beauty in Austria – in particular, a small town called Salzburg.  She travelled there 2 years ago and was captivated by the romantic and graceful atmosphere in this ancient cobbled town, saturated with boutiques, organic markets and bridges over the canal. Even though the city is draped in monotones, she has captured the energy underneath it all, with her vibrant and colourful paint applications.

Jeanie Hugo - Jewellery

Jeanie has recently completed her course in Jewellery Design and Manufacture at Stellenbosch University, where she learned to work with many different metals such as silver, white gold, yellow gold and platinum. It was at university where she discovered her love for graphic art, patterns, photography and colour and started experimenting with translating those into metal.

At present, she loves to combine her jewellery with stories of people, places and personal histories. Mostly, she uses found objects, writing and patterning in her pieces to create graphic, refined and colourful jewellery items that the wearer can treasure for its raw material value as much as for its unique story.
